is an experimental essay film about storytelling, nostalgia, identity, and home. Drawing from the tradition of the essay film, this visual poetic meditation has come as a result of a dramatic experience with mental health which was partly triggered due the confusion of identity that comes with moving away from home. This film is a therapeutic attempt at reconciling my own feelings of emotional abandonment, loss of identity and alienation by revisiting the histories that make up my being.
The reconstruction of memories is a narrative that gives us a sense of identity. Bringing together my grandfather’s archival footage and personal video documentation depicting my family and our relationship to each other and our surroundings, the film serves as a visual reinterpretation of the romanian fairy-tale titled ‘Youth Everlasting and Life Without End’, which my grandmother would always tell me as a child.
This film can also be viewed as a requiem of an irreversible time of memories that once was, and never again will be. Concepts such as image and mythmaking, family as subject and the relationship between ourselves and our environment are explored as an attempt at reconciling with the present moment.

FANTOME – fifteen instances

Caught between the present and the past in a non-linear plot presented by unreliable narrators, today, we live in a state of urban limbo. As we try to place our identities in the world around us, we are unconsciously subjects of an ideological veil. We perceive the world around us as it has been presented to us.
Condensing visual fragments of day to day activities, this is a visual critique on ideology that outlines our condition as passive observers but willing actors on the stage of the world.
15 cinematic vignettes represent fifteen instances of the urban limbo, either from an outside perspective or a more personal one. These instances try to recreate a universal feeling, especially true to our generation. The digitalised and networked aspect of modern life render an overwhelming feeling of angst and uncertainty, where self-identification in this era becomes a reflexive project for each individual; in the meantime we are all unfiltered, pure subjects, ghosts, educated into ideological thought that we may internalise and create an identity of our own making.
This postmodern concern with cultural identity is defined by our inability to map a single strong narrative about the world around us. To cope with a reality that is formed of even more realities, we appeal to veils of fantasy in the form of the distraction of social media, numbing substances, ignorance and facades. These create a plague of illusions that oftentimes leave an individual feeling hollow and devoid of any real, tangible anchors to tie to their own identity.
This is fantome,
ghosts caught between the present and the past,
between songs from home.
they live in our tiny village
I have heard them and I have seen them
they come from different places
they haunt during the day
in their uniforms,
muted by the sound of the overground
one is weeping, the other one is cheering.
one is weeping, one is cheering.
